SCIO was proud to be the Community Engagement Partner for the 8th National Spinal Cord Injury Conference in Niagara Falls, October 17-19. The theme of Sex, Gender and Health of Women is an important one for our community, which was well represented through our 2019 Advocacy Events Grant.
This new initiative awarded seven community members with an expenses-paid opportunity to attend the conference, thanks to funding from the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation and the Rick Hansen Foundation. Applicants had to be registered with SCIO as an activist, described as “a person who has experience with spinal cord injury and or has a friend or family member with SCI. He/she is an informed advocate interested in advancing SCIO’s public policy priorities and raising public awareness on behalf of the SCI community.” Applications came in from across Ontario and were reviewed by an independent panel to arrive at a diverse group of delegates who were expected to ask strategic questions to each workshop and presentation and report back on them.
