Raising Hope: Community Fundraising with SCIO

Community spirit has the power to transform lives, and nowhere is this more evident than in the efforts of our generous supporters at Spinal Cord Injury Ontario.

October was a remarkable month, thanks to the dedication of community leaders and event organizers who gave their time, energy, and hearts to support individuals with spinal cord injuries.

a large group of participants at the SCIO wheelchair relayThe London Wheelchair Relay Challenge is an incredible example of this impact. Organized by long-time volunteer Mike Mulligan, the event brought community members together to experience firsthand the challenges of navigating everyday life in a wheelchair. Mike’s 28-year journey and experience as a peer support mentor with SCIO fueled his passion for this event, as he hoped to give participants a glimpse into the resilience needed for those living with mobility disabilities. We get amazing feedback that everyone really enjoys the event and how hard it really is to push yourself around to complete everyday tasks,” said Mike.

“When I went to Access Expo that SCIO put on in August, I met many amazing people,” said Jenny.   She shared how her husband Glenn showed her how difficult life in a wheelchair could be. “Through his journey, I learned patience and that time makes everything better. Peer support and community connection are essential, and I am proud to champion this cause,” Jenny.

Young Julia and her family give their cheque donation to Executive Director, Stuart HoweEarlier in the year one of our youngest supporters showed us you’re never too young to start making a difference. Julia Vander Wal has been attending SCIO’s Ski Day with her parents since she was a baby. Her father, Rich, an avid skier was also a master of ceremonies of the event. Julia created bracelets and sold them with the proceeds going to SCIO. This past summer she presented a cheque to our CEO Stuart Howe with her proud family looking on.

These stories underscore the power of community and the profound impact of fundraising events. We sincerely thank everyone who organized and participated in these initiatives. Your efforts not only provide critical resources but also foster hope.

Join the movement! If you’re inspired to make a difference, explore how you can lead your fundraising event and support those who need it most.
