A Generous Community

For many people, there is typically no government assistance to help them acquire most of the essential equipment they need like a ramp, lift or the special cushions or pressure relief mattress surfaces that prevent potentially life-threatening pressure sores.

Where support is available, for mobility devices like a wheelchair, 25% of the cost must be contributed by the client. Coming up with these funds can be impossible for many whose financial well-being has been devastated by their injury.

People not covered by the Ontario Disability Support Program, or by work or personal insurance are falling through gaps in the system. Thankfully, our generous community stepped up on Giving Tuesday to help SCIO fill this gap and get people the essential equipment and support they need.

Our deepest thanks go to all the kind and generous people, organizations and sponsors who contributed to our Giving Tuesday campaign and helped raise $39,128 to help people in need, including Matching Gift Sponsor PIA Law:

“The law firms of PIA Law (McLeish Orlando, Oatley Vigmond and Thomson Rogers) are honoured to support SCIO again this year as a matching donor for the Giving Tuesday campaign,” says Leonard Kunka, Partner, PIA Law. “This campaign is instrumental in getting their clients the essential mobility devices and equipment they need for their safety, that they otherwise could not afford, so we are proud to help support this important initiative.”

In 2020 SCIO helped 84 people get much needed essential equipment and mobility aids through our Enhancing Independence Program. Thanks to generous donors and supporters even more people will get the life-changing help they need in 2021.
