The Importance of Giving Tuesday

Many people in Ontario every day find they need a wheelchair, hospital bed or other equipment. These items, unfortunately, are not fully funded by the government. People without additional insurance may need to pay at least 25%, and in many cases 100%, of the cost of the equipment they need.

When essential equipment like a wheelchair costs thousands of dollars, coming up with even 25% of the cost can be impossible, especially when your financial well-being has been affected by a spinal cord injury.

Thanks to our generous community, $15,001 was raised on Giving Tuesday (December 3, 2019) in support of our Enhancing Independence Program, which provides essential equipment and mobility aids to people who need them but cannot afford them.

The success of the day was made possible with the support of individual donors and greatly assisted by the generous support of PIA Law, who generously matched the first $5,000 in donations.

“Once again this year, the law firms of PIA Law (McLeish Orlando, Oatley Vigmond and Thomson Rogers) are honoured to support Spinal Cord Injury Ontario as a matching donor for their Giving Tuesday campaign,” said James Vigmond, Partner at PIA Law.

“Their Enhancing Independence Program plays a vital role for their clients. We are grateful to everyone who so generously donated to this extremely important initiative.”

In 2019 the Enhancing Independence Program helped 102 people get the essential equipment and mobility aids they need. People like Viola:

“I would not have been able to afford the porch lift and other mobility equipment that made it possible for me to return home. Enhancing Independence and Spinal Cord Injury Ontario made a big difference in my life. Thank You.”
