Healing Hands: The Benefits of Adaptive Massage Therapy

Healing Hands: The Benefits of Adaptive Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can increase blood circulation, improve sleep and lower stress. It can also reduce pain and muscle tension. People with disabilities, including those with spinal cord injuries, can benefit from treatment. Lindsey Koivu, an Ottawa-based massage therapist, specializes in treating clients with spinal cord-related disabilities.  She gave a presentation on the topic at a peer connections event in May 2026.

Massage therapists in Ontario receive education on treating a wide variety of health conditions. Throughout their training, they learn how to assess clients, recognize the signs and symptoms of different conditions, understand how those conditions may affect the body, and modify treatment techniques as necessary. They also gain hands-on clinical experience working with individuals with underlying health conditions. When someone enters her practice, one of Lindsey’s first priorities is ensuring they can access the space safely and comfortably. Having a hydraulic treatment table has been invaluable, as it can be lowered for transfers and adjusted throughout the treatment as needed.

Lindsey offers the following advice for individuals with disabilities who would like to try massage therapy:

Do your research: Look for clinics that are Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities (AODA)-compliant and accessible to your individual needs. It is also important to find a registered massage therapist (RMT) who has experience working with your specific condition or disability. The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) provides a public registry where you can search for registered massage therapists in your area.

Ask questions: When booking an appointment, do not be afraid to ask questions.  In fact, the more information we have beforehand, the better we can prepare for your visit and determine whether we are the right fit for your needs. Sometimes that may even mean recommending another therapist or clinic that can better support you.

Consider mobile services: If getting to a clinic is challenging, consider looking into mobile massage therapy services. Many therapists offer in-home treatments, allowing you to receive care in the comfort and familiarity of your own environment.

Communication: Discussing your goals and advocating for your needs can go a long way in creating a positive and successful treatment experience.

As research into massage therapy and its role in managing various health conditions continues to grow, Lindsey believes that more massage therapists will gain experience and confidence working with individuals with disabilities and complex health needs. The profession continues to evolve, and she thinks that is exciting to see.

“Massage therapy is increasingly being recognized as an important part of a comprehensive healthcare plan. With more research being conducted and funding being allocated to better understand its benefits, we are gaining valuable insights into how massage therapy can support individuals living with a wide range of conditions.

“This growing body of evidence is opening new doors and creating opportunities for massage therapists who are interested in working with such a diverse and dynamic community. Ultimately, it means greater access to care, more informed treatment approaches, and better support for the individuals and families we serve.

“I’ve always believed that everyone deserves access to massage therapy. Because of that, I see it as part of my responsibility to advocate for accessibility and inclusivity within our profession, so that more people can experience the benefits of massage therapy regardless of their abilities or circumstances.”
